Before the debate I thought this text was an academic one, because although at the beginning the author uses ordinary words in a simple style of writing, in my view, from the middle of the text to the end, he uses technical vocabulary, and in some sources I found this criterion as requirement in writing academic texts. Besides, it has an essay structure: introduction, thesis, arguments and conclusion. And although the author does not cite other authors, I have heard it is not necessary if the author is an expert in the subject.
However, after the debate and have listened the counter-arguments I admit they made me doubt, but once the professor explained us that it is not necessary that an academic text has the typical structure and maybe because of the relation that we establish between scientific texts and academic texts is why some classmates disagree with professor’s opinion when she says that “why I write” is an academic text even if the author does not cites, or the essay has a lot of bibliographic things, wrote from a personal perspective and does not show counter arguments. I realized that it is important to recognize the patterns of the different types of text but also it is important to understand that depends of the author’s style, their intention and other things, like the audience; is that a text is going to be written.
