Writing establishes a context-free language, an autonomous discourse that cannot be doubted or directly questioned because the writer’s discourse is separated from his written text.
I do not agree with this premise because as critic readers, we have the possibility to criticize a book, a novel and any other written text. With arguments we can deny what a book says or explain. Not only because something is written, means that is true. We, as readers have different points of view and our judgment are valid.
People cannot see written texts as God’s words. We must take into account that not all the books are relevant, some books are useless and readers need to have a strong criterion when choosing a book.
However, in the text “orality and literacy” the author gives a reason that can be acceptable, he explains that the text cannot be questioned because it is already written, a book cannot change, no matter if the rest of the world knows that what the book says is a lie. A book does not have the possibility to change what it means, although its author does. That’s why the author of “orality and literacy” says that the text is detached from its author.
